Mark Parsons is a full-time wedding and portrait photographer with over 20 years of experience. His studio is located in the Athens, Georgia area, but he is available for location photography across Georgia and throughout the Southeast.

Mark's unique and fun-loving personality will ease the stress of your wedding day and allow him to capture the day as you always dreamed it would be. He combines a candid photojournalistic style with traditional group portraiture to capture every aspect of your special day. Drawing upon his experience of photographing over 800 weddings, Mark brings the competence and skill of a true professional to your wedding day.

Why should I hire a professional photographer?

Photographing a wedding is not for the faint-hearted, and it requires a unique personality.  You must ensure that your photographer is confident in his or her abilities and accustomed to the stresses involved.  It takes more than a nice digital camera to capture the memories of your once-in-a-lifetime event.  Your expectations for the quality of your wedding photography likely exceed the capabilities of most amateur photographers.

Do you work with an assistant?

Yes.  My assistant is invaluable at a wedding.  There is simply too much for one person to do in so short a time, and we work together to smooth the flow of your wedding day.  Additionally, some packages include a second photographer.

What is your style of photography?

I am a contemporary photographer, providing journalistic images that capture the unique moments of your day, as well as the posed portraits you desire.  I approach each wedding with a fresh perspective, looking for the special moments that distinguish your wedding from all others.

More About Mark Mahaffey (DJ/Emcee/Event Coordinator)

Mark L. Mahaffey is your personal Event Facilitator, Emcee, and Disc Jockey, and he excels at getting ALL of your guests involved.  From Swing Dance music of the big band era to today's most current hits, there will be something for everyone.  He can provide quick dance lessons to your guests, ensuring that everyone can participate, as well instructions to all of the popular group dances such as the Electric Slide, Cha Cha Slide, Chicken Dance, Hora, Limbo, Twist, Bunny Hop and more.  Mr. Mahaffey also works well with children and makes them feel a part of the event to the delight of parents and grandparents.  Another favorite item that is provided is the tasteful and non-obnoxious use of props for the enjoyment of your guests such as hats, sunglasses, maracas, inflatable instruments, (guitars, saxophones, keyboards, microphones, and beach balls).

Are interaction, props, and dance instruction appropriate for a classy event?  If it is what you want, and if it is done in an experienced and tasteful way…absolutely!  Mr. Mahaffey is not a “cheesy DJ.”  He is a seasoned and professional entertainer who will provide the type of event that you want for your guests.  You are the one who chooses the manner of presentation at your event.  This includes the level of involvement and interaction by Mr. Mahaffey, and can be anything from low-key to highly interactive.  However, based on his experience, don’t underestimate your friends and coworkers.  On the outside, many people can appear stuffy or conservative, etc., but deep down everybody wants to have a great time.  Mr. Mahaffey even has a picture from an event where the 87-year-old grandmother was doing the "hula-hoop" better than everyone else!  But please note:  If you do choose to have a very interactive event, it will never be obnoxious or pushy and is always in good taste.  And, don’t forget about some of your guests who are celebrating special days of their own.  Wouldn't it be nice to recognize that couple who is having their anniversary (perhaps with a dance dedicated in their honor) or maybe have everyone join in for a round of "Happy Birthday" sung to that special birthday “boy or girl.”  Throughout the entire event, whenever an announcement or introduction is made, it is done by Mr. Mahaffey, an experienced emcee with that "FM quality, radio voice" that very few people possess.

In addition to style, there are many choices you will make regarding your event, and these are covered through personal consultations with Mr. Mahaffey and through his customized Event Planner, which is available to you at no charge after placing your reservation.  Be sure to see him early in your planning process to locate any other vendors needed for your event (location, caterer, photographer, florist, videographer, etc.) as well.

Entertainment Notes

What is a DJ? - The person you think of as the “DJ” is one of the most important people at your events, and yes, he or she will play music.  However, if you hire the right person, he or she should be much more than “just a DJ.”  In fact, the professional who DJ’s as a career is an … Event Planner, Referral Service, On-Site Coordinator, Counselor, Problem Solver, Entertainment Director, Master of Ceremonies, Announcer, Crowd Motivator, Music Specialist, Music Mixer, Disc Jockey, Karaoke Jock, Board Operator, Lighting Technician, and sometimes an Actor, Dancer, and Singer.  How much would you have to pay to hire a person with all of these skills for your business?  Could you even FIND someone who has all of these skills!?!  Certainly not somebody who does this part-time.  The yellow pages are full of people who call themselves DJs, but a true full-time professional with these qualifications is not easy to locate.  When you do find someone with these attributes they are well worth a range of 15% to 20% of the overall budget, given that they have 80% of the responsibility for the success of the event.2

What do you want to remember? – At the end of the day, most people want to go home knowing that their guests had a great time.   While everything plays a part…the linens, flowers, vegetable platter, or “buffet” chicken are usually not the biggest contributors to the overall success of your event.   So, when budgeting, be sure to dedicate an appropriate amount in your budget to ensuring that you and your guests are not disappointed.  If it’s a wedding that you are planning, you have no doubt spent, or are in the process of spending a great deal of time and money on one of the biggest days of your life.  According to the Atlanta Bride, the average wedding nationwide costs $20,000.  The AJC reports that the average wedding in Atlanta is almost $25,000.  This means you are spending between $4,000 and $5,000 PER HOUR for the typical wedding time frame.  Think about it this way, if your guests leave just one hour early because of poor entertainment, you have thrown away over $4,000 dollars.  Choose wisely, and you can relax knowing that your big day is being looked after by an experienced professional.  By the way, bridal magazines have suggested an entertainment budget of around 15% - 20% of your total budget.
